The second half of the concert features Frost Distinguished Alumnus André Raphel conducting the HMI Orchestra with multi-Grammy winning composer and violin virtuoso Mark O’Connor as soloist on his own five-movement Improvised Violin Concerto (subtitled Fire, Air, Water, Earth, and Faith). The work is described as “a phenomenon” and “utterly groundbreaking.” It is the first concerto to feature an entirely improvised solo part over a through-composed orchestral score.
